Remains of the Past
The Chattahoochee Brick Company, and subsequent owner General Shale Brick, went through several periods of construction and operational changes. Nearly all of the structures on the site have been demolished, but through the use of historic records and on-site archaeological investigations, the city intends to discover what evidence of the past still remains underground. We want to know what building foundations, tunnels, and other buried features may still help tell the story of the site’s past.
More importantly, prisoners who were worked to death during the convict leasing period may have been buried on site. The City will work with scholars and archaeologists to conduct a diligent search for graves- a critical step for revealing and memorializing the past.
