Love Our Places: Creative Bike Parking

LOVE OUR PLACES: creative bike parking

ABOUT love our places

Love Our Places is a Department of City Planning program committed to re-imagining Atlanta’s public realm. Formerly known as the Placemaking Program, Love Our Places uses low-cost, high-impact interventions as a tool for residents and community organizations to lead the changes they want to see in their own neighborhoods.

In 2022, Love our Places awarded several organizations with creative bike parking that include elements like bike racks, bike repair stations, and interpretive art. The Department of City Planning matched a unique artist to partner with each awarded organization to develop and implement custom art for each bike parking location.

Love our Places: Dedication Event

The City of Atlanta Department of City Planning hosted a bike ride & dedication event on Saturday, October 22. The bike parking was installed for the Love Our Places Creative Bike Parking initiative and features artwork by local artists.

award details

Creative bike parking structures will include amenities such as bike racks, interpretive art, and bike repair stations and will be awarded through a competitive application process.

Applicants may choose from one of the following award types:

Bike Corral

Bike corrals are the conversion of one on-street parking space into a bike parking structure. This design is best suited for areas with multiple destinations, such as a local commercial district. City of Atlanta corridors with existing on-street parking are eligible for a bike corral. State routes may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Sidewalk-level Bike Parking

Sidewalk-level bike parking utilizes the sidewalk amenity or furniture zone to create bike parking. This design is best suited for areas with multiple destinations, such as a local commercial district. Sidewalks must be at least 8.5’ to be eligible for sidewalk-level bike parking.

Open Space Bike Parking

Open space bike parking serves one specific destination, a public park. The park must be owned by the City of Atlanta. Private property and open spaces owned by other public agencies will not be considered.

ELIGIBLITY & process

Applications are open to community organizations such as, neighborhood associations, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, business associations, and park conservancies or friends of parks organizations (if you are an individual or business interested in applying but need help finding an applicant partner, please reach out to us).

Awards will be given in two steps. First, a conditional award will be provided on the basis of eligibility and the scoring criteria. After receiving the conditional award, applicants must gather support from their local neighborhood organization to move forward with the award. Once awards are announced, the City will pair each recipient with an artist to develop and implement custom art for each award location. When possible, the City will prioritize pairing local artists to each awarded community.
