2021 COMPrehensive development plan update
We are changing the way Atlanta plans for future growth and development. Since the last Comprehensive Development Plan in 2016, more and more people are calling Atlanta home, and there is no reason to believe that this trend won't continue. For Atlanta to become a more mobile, affordable and livable city, it must be designed to accommodate more people. The 2021 Comprehensive Development Plan update is our chance to design an Atlanta for growth with greater density and diversity while conserving the unique character and scale of our neighborhoods.
Atlanta City Design’s five core values of equity, progress, ambition, access, and nature compel us to take the following actions in the 2021 Comprehensive Development Plan:
We can deliver a city built on equity so that everyone benefits from change.
We can make progress by protecting things that have meaning.
We can create opportunities for both our global and local ambition.
We can maintain our access to the region without destroying the places we live.
We can embrace the beauty and value of both nature and urban life.
Atlanta City Design articulates community goals, needs and opportunities and a new approach to comprehensive development planning. Our collective challenge for the 2021 Comprehensive Development Plan is to design a city for everyone and become the beloved community.
Public Engagement
The 2021 Comprehensive Development Plan is for the people of Atlanta who live and work here now and in the future. The State requires plans to be updated every five years, and this year’s update will happen when Atlantans are facing unprecedented development, a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and a national reckoning on racism and injustice.
We kicked off the CDP with a Zoom webinar on October 28th - check out the recording and list of attendees here.
As we take on this effort, we draw upon Atlanta City Design and its core values of equity, progress, ambition, access, and nature. Engaging all people, especially those who are under-served or under-represented, will be essential. We will provide people opportunities to learn about Atlanta City Design and to voice ideas and perspective to shape the Comprehensive Development Plan. Interacting with each other will be different during the COVID-19 pandemic, but we will use a variety of methods to enable everyone to learn and have a voice, even those who don’t yet have it.
We will post information, documents, videos, and updates to a website and through social media so the public can ask questions, share thoughts, and follow progress.
We will host six virtual public meetings organized around the values of Atlanta City Design and designing a city for everyone. People participating live will be able to interact through a combination of panels, small group breakouts, question and answer sessions, polls, and presentations. All meetings will be recorded and posted online.
We will create meeting kits for anyone to host a conversation about planning with friends, family, or strangers. Participants will be able to share their experiences, photos, videos, and audio online, as well.
We will have multiple opportunities for each of the 25 Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) to prioritize infrastructure projects within their neighborhoods, recommend growth and development policies for their neighborhoods and corridors, and review and comment on the entire plan.
Engagement will start later in October and continue until the plan is updated in October 2021. Throughout the process, each current-day concern raised and each idea about the future shared must hold up to our core values and further our efforts to making a better Atlanta. Only by holding ourselves accountable in this way, do we have a chance of living up to the promise of the beloved community.
